Ulysses S Grant

  • Born Hiram Ulysses Grant on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio
  • Graduated from The United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. on July 1, 1843
  • Served with the army as a 2nd Lt. in the War with Mexico, 1845-1848.  Brevetted twice for bravery in battle
  • Married Julia Boggs Dent in 1848. They had 4 children: Fred, Ulysses Jr., Nellie, and Jesse.  Had an extremely strong marriage, a devoted husband and father
  • Grant loved horses his entire life, and was considered to be the best equestrian in the army
  • Appointed by a special act of congress to Lt. General in 1864, 1st Lt. General since George Washington
  • General in Chief of all  Union Forces from 1864-1865; Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865, thus effectively ending the Civil War
  • U.S.  President from 1869-1877
  • Died at Mount McGregor, New York on July 23, 1885 of throat cancer

    • Live on family farm with wife, Peggy, and daughter, Stephanie, near Seward, Illinois, where we raise corn, oats, soy beans, hay, a few cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, and, of course, horses.
    • Performed as General and President Grant since 2000, appearing with horse,“Jack”,  and/or wife, Peggy as Julia Dent Grant, at many events each year.  Made approximately 300 appearances in the last 12 years in Milwaukee, Chicago, Galena, Springfield, St. Louis, Columbus, Ohio, Old Bedford, PA and many places in between.
